about

1. LAY MY HEAD DOWN, KANSAS

A trail of changing light.
She’s moving on from my name
Lay my head down, Kansas. Kansas lay me down

And under foot they sleep.
The words of her mouth lay silver
Somewhere over those hills, the heart of a loaded gun
I tell you, the heart of a loaded gun

And it comes around and goes around
It comes to bowl me over
It comes around and goes around, and I’m looking over my shoulder

Looking in the rearview mirror
The face of a girl called Cinnamon
But I’ll be trail-bound morning, shining in the sun

A sliver of the moon tonight.
The words of December, hollow
Lay my head down, Kansas. Kansas lay me down.

2. ALPINE APPROXIMATELY

Somewhere in the middle of Heaven and Earth
We carved a story for a time
Out in the elements, as free as the wind
Alpine air on my mind
The bedside table, my favorite refrain
The record spinning. We got lost in the dream. For a while...

Still of morning, sun creeping in
I lay there waiting out of sight
Then over coffee, I stared in your eyes
This world couldn’t hold you if it tried
We took that long drive over the ridge
They say what comes around is what it is. For a while...

3. MAKING MY WAY

I’m singing my song for you
Though I never figured myself for a singer
I’m counting the stars for you
And I’ll watch the night as long as it should linger
I’m making my way to you Making my own way, to make you my own

You could be anywhere
On a train across the deserts where I wander
Out in the ocean air
I’m mystified but still my love grows stronger
I’m making my way to you Making my own way, to make you my own

I’m not asking you to lose yourself,
To give it up, or fight the fight within me
And I’d say those things I need to say
but I don’t know if I have the rights words in me
I’m breaking it down for you. Making my way to make you my own

I’m singing my song for you
Though I never figured myself for a singer
I’m counting the stars for you
And I’ll watch the night as long as it should linger
I’m making my way to you. Making my way to make you my own
Making my way to you. Making my own way, to make you my own

4. OZONA (BY WAY OF PANDALE)

Some people live in this world but they don’t see the sky
While others go losing themselves in the clouds passing by
Well I don’t guess I saw the trees through the forest,
Or the dirt of the town I was in
But if I had you with me, believe me when I say, I’d do it all over again

I drove to the place where I last saw you looking at me
And I traced every step and turned every stone I could see
And it must have looked strange, just a fool in the rain,
Wandering out there where every road ends
But I’d be that fool for you, and love you forever, and do it all over again

I woke in the morning and looked out my window,
Not sure of the day or the time
I might have been dreaming, but I can’t stop believing
That I don’t still dwell somwehere in your mind

And if I did you wrong I would play you a song
For that home in your sky I might win
But if you never hear it, believe me when I say
I’d do it all over again
Believe me when I say I love you forever and I’d do it all over again

5. MY LOVE WAS JUST COMING ON

The rain it was falling in the corner street light
And Jana was just coming home
She couldn’t see what was there in plain sight
That my love was just coming on

A thundering wind. A desperate hand.
A flicker that lasts for a song
We got shut down, a darkness too soon
as my love was just coming on

She’d been out drinking with the girls late tonight
She looked down and turned off her phone
Back on her feet and out on the town
while my love was just coming on

That rain flooded the town
The sirens rang out
The radio played “Hearts Of Stone”
Then the man on the news said the bridges were gone
But my love was just coming on
My love was just coming on

6. BORDER HYMN

Won’t you take me over Jordan on across the Rio Grande
I want to cross that lonesome river holding your hand
Well there’s still this hole out in TexasI can crawl into now and then
That’s where I was headed right now
I don’t know when I’ll see you again

7. BORDER FEVER

A million tables line the hallways
And there’s a banquet in your name
You turned around and faced the wrong way. But who’s to say?

It was with great anticipation
We pondered riddles of the mind
The towers in the distance looming, out of time

The backroads take you to the highlands
But through the streets of gold you run
I know em like the back of my hand, but I’m not the one

“Well, bring him in!”, the Captain ordered.
“We’ll see if he is who he says.”
I just lay sleeping on the border with all the rest

So take me with you where you’re going
Or should I just turn the other cheek
I can’t live off the wine that’s flowing out of me

The papers had gone up in ashes
in cars abandoned by the road
And sheltered from the lightning flashes
I sat alone, sat alone...

But in the twilight of the morning
down in the quiet by the stream
I put my feet into the water, and I was free

8. LONESOME ECHO

Did you hear me calling to you?
You were wearing that flowered dress
In the sunlight with your hair up off your neck

Now there’s a silence on the hillside
and it cuts me to the bone
Cos I know that echo’s never coming home
That lonesome echo’s never coming home

There were pictures on the table
of your children whom I never met
In the lamplight of the nights I can’t forget

Now the record’s spinning softly with a melody undefined
And a voice that cannot escape my mind
No that lonesome echo never leaves my mind

In the morning I’ll be heading down the highway
Past the places we saw not so long ago
Where the wind will speak a one-way conversation
Chasing that old lonesome echo down the road

9. BORROWED TIME (NEIL YOUNG IN THE 70s)

You can scream at the top of your lungs
or fade away into silence
Whisper things that have never been said
You’re still living on borrowed time

Morning rises, another sun sets
On the fields ever after
So double down when you’re placing your bets
On your way to the common line

Time will tell on its own time, count on that
Catch you lost in a slumber
Steal a dream from the thief in the night
‘Cos you’re living on borrowed time

Look at her face, she’s still on the run like
Neil Young in the 70s
Walk free and then follow her down
‘cos you’re living on borrowed time

10. ALWAYS NEAR, NEVER AGAIN

Aint it funny when the joke’s on you
A wailing whisper just to see it through
I was alone when I got the call
My funny valentine’s not funny at all
I’ll never love again. I’ll never love again
I’ll never love again, it’s true

Alone with clever thoughts in empty halls
That lead to nowhere where no luck could fall
So I pushed away ideas of someone new
Til I saw the spinning wheel land on you

And I’ll never doubt again. I’ll never doubt again
I’ll never doubt again, it’s true. It’s true...

about

Greg Vanderpool Austin, Texas

Texas-native Greg Vanderpool spent over a decade with his bands Monahans and Milton Mapes, steadily riding the line between indie rock and Americana. His songs (which have been covered by the likes of Robert Plant) explore the spaces between stark, hazy drones, Sunday hymns and intensely rhythmic pop anthems. ... more
